Assisting Victims of Abuse in Later Life

In observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, OVC is offering a Web Forum Guest Host Session on June 18, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET. Bonnie Brandl, M.S.W., National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life, and Jane Raymond, M.S., Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, will share best practices for assisting victims of domestic abuse in later life. Medal of Valor Nomination Period Open

Application period: May 30 to July 31, 2008
The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is the highest national award for valor by a public safety officer. The medal is awarded by the President to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage in protecting or saving human lives. Submit an online application at the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor Web site. (BJA)

 
Supporting Random Student Drug Testing

A total of $5.8 million in new drug prevention grants will assist 49 schools in 20 states. These federal grants will support school-based random student drug testing programs in schools in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, and Washington. Victim Justice Positions Announced

Application deadline: June 26, 2008
OVC is accepting applications for three Victim Justice Program Specialist positions. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining contacts with grantees to determine implementation strategies utilized. Applicants Invited for Juvenile Drug Court Solicitation

Application deadline: July 3, 2008
The Brief Interventions and Referrals to Treatment (BIRT) for Juvenile Courts and Juvenile Drug Courts solicitation invites juvenile courts to collaborate with drug courts to implement BIRT and to define and identify the benefits of partnerships between juvenile courts and juvenile drug courts to ensure that substance-abusing juvenile offenders receive appropriate treatment. Grant Focuses on Electronic and Cyber Crime

Application deadline: June 23, 2008
The Electronic and Cyber Crime Training and Technical Assistance Program serves communities by providing training, technical assistance, and related support that leverages cooperative efforts between electronic and cyber crime training and technical assistance service providers. (BJA)

 
OJJDP Announces Latino Youth Mentoring Program

Application deadline: June 20, 2008
OJJDP invites applicants for its Latino Youth Mentoring Program. Successful applicants will include local school districts with a demonstrable Latino gang problem that are committed to or already working with nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and other community partners to provide mentoring services to at-risk youth. Training and Technical Assistance Provider Sought

Application deadline: July 3, 2008
Through its Juvenile Drug Court Training and Technical Assistance Program, OJJDP seeks a provider to deliver training and technical assistance to juvenile drug courts and family drug courts that are interested in learning about and implementing Brief Interventions and Referrals to Treatment. Bringing Crime Analysts Into the Police Environment

"Enhancing the Problem-Solving Capacity of Crime Analysis Units" (NCJ 222841, 48 pp.), a COPS Office Problem-Oriented Guide for Police, is organized around nine concerns that police managers must address when developing a problem-solving capacity within a crime analysis unit to ensure that the crime analysts and their work are fully integrated into departmental operations. Bulletin Examines Violence by Teenage Girls

"Violence by Teenage Girls: Trends and Context" (NCJ 218905, 24 pp.) assesses trends of juvenile arrest rates for violent crimes, focusing on simple and aggravated assault. The bulletin also examines the context in which girls and boys offend, including the types of victims targeted and environments where offenses commonly occur. (OJJDP)

 
First Responder Resources Available

"First Response to Victims of Crime" is a multimedia package produced by the National Sheriffs' Association. It examines the impact of crime on victims and describes how law enforcement, as first responders, can meet victims' needs. New Guide Addresses Developing Rural SANE Programs

Many rural areas have struggled to establish and sustain Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs. "Implementing SANE Programs in Rural Communities: The West Virginia Regional Mobile SANE Project" (NCJ 221749, 51 pp.) offers a blueprint for developing one in your community. Revised Fact Sheet Available Online

The revised "Children's Justice Act Partnerships for Indian Communities" fact sheet (FS 000314) is available online. This grant program provides funding to help American Indian/Alaska Native communities improve their ability to manage serious child abuse cases. (OVC)

Sex Offender Residency Restrictions: Implementation and Impact, a free online event, will be held June 19, 2008, from 1 to 3 p.m. ET. This event will examine the facts of residency restrictions, research about types of offenders, lack of research about effectiveness, use of crime mapping, and practical considerations required when implementing these restrictions. Symposium Examines Effective Police Union-Management Relationships

The first National Joint Police Union-Management Executive Symposium will be held October 27-31, 2008, in East Lansing, Michigan. This event, sponsored by Michigan State University and the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, will feature content and skill-building segments that will help participants frame and understand the implications of key union and management issues.
