Introduction
Protecting children from violence, abuse,
neglect, and other forms of victimization
is one of the primary purposes of the Office
of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention (OJJDP). This mandate to protect
children comes from the Juvenile Justice
and Delinquency Prevention Act of
1974, which requires OJJDP to conduct
activities and programs to prevent delinquency;
the Missing Children’s Assistance
Act of 1984; and the Victims of Child
Abuse Act of 1990. To carry out this mandate
more effectively, OJJDP created the
Child Protection Division (CPD) in 2000 to
oversee its efforts to keep children safe
and to develop activities related to child
protection issues. This Bulletin outlines
CPD’s mission and provides brief descriptions
of some of its child protection programs
and initiatives.
